The following day Annie planted a Himalayan Cedar in memory of Mary Clarke, the younger sister of Emmeline. Mary Clarke had been present at what came to be known as the Black Friday demonstration of 18th November 1910, despite her supporters in Brighton begging her not to go because of her ill health. She had been arrested and sentenced to a month in prison for window breaking. She had returned to the home of her brother on Christmas Eve but retired to her room during Christmas day dinner. When her sister Emmeline went to check on her, she was unconscious. She died soon after from a burst blood vessel in her brain. The memorial plaque states:
